Hear that sound? It’s the recess bell! Shove your work away in your cubby and grab your backpack. Let’s run outside for a breath of fresh air, together (and no one gets to tell us when it’s over).
We’re Chris and Rachel, and Recess is our way of documenting the reasons for, experience of, and reflections that result from quitting our day jobs and spending a year+ living (and a bit of working) abroad. We’ll be exploring questions like: What will we learn about joy, labor, and the relationship between the two in this new environment? How can we balance the desire for community and stability with that for change and adventure? Will we sell out to the travel influencer money and go from being your friends with a travel blog to attempting to sell you organic deodorant?
While recess can be defined in the general sense as suspending work or taking a break, our time has even more similarities to a school recess. We’re getting outdoors to rest, play, create, move, learn-by-doing, and probably fall off the metaphorical monkey bars a few times. Recess is about far more than just playing (though that alone would be worthwhile!) Our friend Jeana recently gave us an in-depth explanation of play therapy as unstructured play time that allows kids to process their emotions, develop autonomy, and express themselves and their desires. We talked about how all of these things are equally needed by adults, who rarely have time and space for true uninhibited play.
So join us as we ask these questions about work and life from the deck of a sailboat or the heat of a kitchen, instead of from behind our laptop screens. While we’re so excited to be heading off on adventure, the hardest thing is being away from everyone back home. Thank you so much for joining us and following along. Now let’s run out the door and be on our way…
…to Recess!
